Last Day of School

First day of school:

Last day of school:

I have to say that I have just let my blog go. I don't want to, but I just can't seem to sit down and get any thoughts together. Hopefully something will come to me!

Boring

I've got good news and bad news...

Good news:
I'm updating my blog!

Bad news:
It's nothing exciting. I just haven't been very bloggy lately. I haven't been very motivated to sit down and come up with a creative post. One thing I can blame it on is the end of the school year. Crazy busy! Plus the week after I get done with school I leave for camp for a week. The timing couldn't be worse, but oh well.

Hopefully inspiration will hit me soon and I'll update with something much more exciting than this!

Kentucky Derby Shower

My roommate got married this past summer. Between his and her families & friends, they had so many showers and ended up inviting the same people. One of their showers was right around derby time, so some of the friends decided to do a Kentucky Derby/Gift Card shower.

Guests dressed up in their big hats and nice clothes and ate some yummy finger foods.

The gift card was a great idea because no one felt pressured to bring an actual gift.

I didn't get many pictures, but you get the idea!!

April's NEW

I've done a pretty good job at fulfilling my new years resolution of doing something new each month.

This month may not be the most exhillerating, but it was a big deal to me. Oh, and I'm kind of stretching it a little bit b/c I technically did this on May 1. It was a Friday, but it was the last week of April, so I'm counting it...deal with it! Hee hee!

I taught about creation at school!

Now this may not be a big deal if I taught at a private christian school, but I don't. I'm in a very large public school system. Our curriculum has us teach about the formation of the universe by introducing the Big Bang theory as the most widely accepted theory.

Relate the Nature of Science to the progression of basic historical scientific models
(geocentric, heliocentric) as they describe our solar system, and the Big Bang as it
describes the formation of the universe.

So, I did my part. I presented the big bang as a THEORY. And believe me, I emphatically stress the "theory" part.

But I remember that after 6 years of teaching, I would always have kids ask me what were some other theories. Inquisitive lil suckers!

So, this year, I decided I was going to present other ideas, too! Creation being one of them. It's funny, because most of the kids are taught creation and believe that to be true anyways.

As I was studying other theories to share with the kids, my mind was overwhelmed! There are hundreds of theories out there and, let me tell you, they are extremely complex. I picked 2 that I thought were easy enough to explain to a 6th grader's mind. If you're interested, they are Steady State Theory and The Cyclic Theory. Good luck interpreting all that!!

Another thing that I found interesting, was that more and more scientists are finding fault with the Big Bang. As our technology has increased, scientists are finding new information about space and locating new things in our universe that don't match up with the Big Bang. Duh!

I have to admit that I was kinda nervous. I wondered what kind of back lash I might get from the kids or their parents. Apparently I worried for no reason. God is good! I've gotten no emails from parents or complaints from kids.

I know this probably wasn't the most exciting post to read, but hey, I AM a science teacher so what do you expect?! Ha!

Stay tuned for next month!
